Investigating Audio Production

Music is sometimes more vital than the actual visuals that you see within a film, as music can portray emotion or show how realistic some things are. People don't actually realise how important audio is as without the audio it would just be people walking around on a stage but, you can still portray what is happening within a scene with just audio.

Non-Diegetic & Diegetic Sounds

Diegetic sound comes from within the video, because diegetic sounds occur in real time, it can include characters voices, music coming from instruments, or sounds made by objects within the video.

Non-diegetic sound is any type of sound that does not exist within the world of the film itself. It's the type of sound that characters in a film are not able to hear, but that we can.

Ambient Sounds

Ambient sounds are noises in the background or surrounding noises. You can hear ambient noises everyday, for example, people, animals, weather, any kind've background noise that can be heard within a scene or everyday life. Down below are some examples of using ambient sounds.

Soundscapes

For this topic we got given multiple sound effects to create something that we liked. I tried to createa scary sound, with the feeling of being on a boat in the middle of the ocean at night, and a lighthouse in the distance making the loud noise. Down below are screenshots of what I did as well as the actual video of the noise so you can have a listen. I also tried to creat a panning effect on the loud pinging noise, by moving the panning line up and down to make the noise seem like it's moving around you, then I put an underwater effect on the alarm clock noise to make it seem more creepier.

Foley

Down below is a video of a Mortal Kombat fatality scene, with this scene we had to create our own noises with a variety of different items, ranging from foods to noises from the human mouth. These sounds that we recorded were used to create the braking bones and all the blood and gore noises. This is known as foley, when a noise isn't loud enough on the actual recording foley artists add the noises with everyday objects that sound like the specific noise they are potraying. Down below are also images of us creating these noises.

Audio Around the College

During this me, Neve, Caitlin and Rhys went around the college to record diegetic sounds. Down below is what we did with pictures over the audio of where we recorded this audio in. Too create this we had to be quiet to get the audio from the background.

Super Mario Sound Design

To make this I was given the video that you can see underneath. Then we had to add the noises to the video, so I got the specific noises that were needed and had to put them over the video. With some of the noises I had to pan to make the noises sound more realistic, and how it would actually be within a game trailer.

This is a list I made when watching the original video without sound. I wrote down the noises I would expect to hear.
  • Thumping
  • Dinosaur Roar
  • Wind
  • Mario Blast
  • Rocks
  • Birds Chirping
  • Gravel
  • Swishing
  • Waterfall
  • Hat Spinning
  • Music in Background
  • Nintendo Switch Click
  • Mario Jumping
  • Mario Explosion
  • Birds Flying

Alternative Dispute Resolution

(ADR)

Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) means to re-record audio in a more controlled and quieter place, usually in a studio. It involves the re-recording of dialogue by the original actor after filming as a way to improve audio quality or reflect dialogue changes.

Garage Band

I used Garage Band to create Blinding Lights by the Weeknd. I then moved the tracks around to try and keep the track interesting so it doesn't repeat the same tune. I also edited some of the tracks to make them sound different, making the song sound better. I also added an effect that introduced the drumming beat slowly, to create a suspense. Down below are screenshots of what I did.

Need for Speed

I think for this trailer, the kind of music that would fit this track would be fast paced or a bit international due to Need for Speed being a car game that travels around the world.

This is my final result with making the music for the Need for Speed trailer. I went with a Chinese style of music. I then also added my own voice saying a few words to create a bigger suspense and make the trailer look and sound better. I then added a few more different loops especially a bass as I didn't have one. I also edited the volume of some of the loops to create a much better track for the trailer. Below are some screenshots.

Scene Analysis

Dialogue: The dialogue is coming from the main character, who is reminising over a memory that he had. He is explaining what is happening and who each character is. That is the only dialogue used in this opening scene.

Ambience: There wasn't a specific ambience other than an older setting, showing the audience that this is a memory.

Sound FX: The only sound effects used was the old aesthetic feeling but, other than that there wasn't many sound effects used.

Music: There was music playing throughout the opening scene, it was an old school kind of track that was playing.

Diegetic/Non-Diegetic Sound: The music was non-diegetic as only the audience can hear the music and the dialogue was diegetic as that was what the main character was saying.

Scene Analysis 2

Dialogue: The only dialogue used is from the main character describing what the film is going to be about, you also have some dialogue used from the characters who are in the background when the main character talks to them.

Ambience: The ambience you can hear in the background is everything that you would hear during a time like that. Machines and noises going on in the background.

Sound FX: The sound FX you can hear is the big board on the screen also when they go into the virtual reality world everything in there would be sound FX.

Music: You can hear a classic song in the background that most people know. Then when entering the virtual relaity world the music changes to emphasise on how big and incredible the Oasis is.

Diegetic/Non-Diegetic Sound: You can hear non diegetic and diegetic sounds throughout the first opening scene multiple times.
